Although it is great to have the freedom to work when you want and at your own pace, it is also important that you have some type of structure or basic procedures to keep yourself on track. One major issue that people that are new to working from home have is problems with productivity.

It is really easy for your productivity to decrease when working from home because you have distractions, privacy may be an issue, and you may not know how to balance work time and family time. It’s a learning process, but it’s not impossible.

Here are some tips for increasing your productivity:

Create a Daily Schedule and Stick to It. By creating a daily schedule for yourself you are able to plan out how your time is going to be spent throughout your day. But don’t just plan your work time. Make sure you are also planning your breaks in between work as well as family time. You have to learn how to create that perfect medium to where you are not neglecting your family or your work.

Tackle Time Consuming Tasks First. It may be a habit of yours to complete tasks that don’t take up much time because they are often the easier tasks. The reason this is not a good idea is because it allows you to procrastinate on the more urgent and time consuming tasks which can cause you to miss a deadline or not get the task done. Instead take care of those time consuming tasks that have deadlines first just in case you may need some extra time to work on them, and then work on the simple tasks that have no deadlines last.

Eliminate Any Potential Distractions. Unnecessary distractions in your home can cause you not to get any work done, or can cause you to sacrifice the quality of your work. When working from home make sure your workspace is in an isolated part of the house, where you will not be disturbed. Let your family know your work schedule so that you will not have to deal with unnecessary interruptions.

Take Regular Brakes. The time that you take out for breaks is just as important as the time that you spend on your work. Working without breaks will burn you out and can create a stressful work environment for you. It’s ok to take a 5-10 minute break in between projects, just make sure that you don’t go overboard and you come back to your work.

These are some simple things that you can do to improve productivity in your home office. But you have to also remember that your level of productivity will also have a lot to do with your discipline as a work from home professional. If you have problems with discipline then it helps plan out every day point by point, until your discipline kicks in and becomes like second nature.

This is especially true if you have really young children. Learn how to work around your child’s natural sleeping schedule. People have always said that the perfect time to get things done is when the children are sleeping and that’s true!  Take note of your child’s sleep pattern and use that time to get your most important tasks done.

Keeping your children entertained. It can be a little more complicated working from home with younger children than school aged children because they require a lot of attention and nurturing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pull out your baby’s swing, put her in her favorite jumper, let her play in your play pen, etc. Utilize your baby’s favorite activities to free up your hands and proceed to get work done.

Show your older children how to chip in. As children get a little older, they gradually move into that stage where they want to help with everything or “do everything that mommy and daddy does.” Finding little things they can do to help out can not only keep them busy but it will also teach them more about how you work. This will help them to understand what you do a little better and they will respect your space a little better.

Allow family and friends to help out. When most parents decide they want to work from home, they think more along the lines of being able to stay home with the children. If this was your outlook on the situation, I am here to tell you that it is a lot harder than it sounds. If things get too crazy don’t hesitate to ask for help from your friends and family members. Now I am not saying that it has to be an everyday type thing, but it can give you that much needed rest that you will need.

Find that perfect medium between family time and work time. Working from home can be very time consuming when you don’t set boundaries for your work schedule. And your children will recognize the time that you spend with them change. So it important that you create the perfect balance between family time and work time, because children will get stingy with their time, they will get jealous, and you don’t want to make them feel left out.
